How to pack ties for travel

Roll, fold or use a case? Pack silk ties without sharp creases and help them recover quickly when you arrive.

Roll loosely for a suitcase

Lay the tie face down on a clean surface. Do not make a hard fold. Roll it loosely from the narrow end without pulling the edges. Put the roll in its silk pouch, a small compartment or between soft garments where it will not be compressed.

Roll several ties separately. Elastic bands leave marks, while a rigid tie case is useful when a tightly packed suitcase will be under pressure.

Use a folded shirt for short trips

A tie can be doubled loosely and placed inside a folded shirt. The fold must remain soft; the collar area creates a protected pocket. This saves space when the suitcase is not heavily compressed.

Do not place shoes, chargers or wash bags next to it. Hard edges create local pressure marks that are difficult to relax.

Unpack immediately

Remove ties from luggage as soon as you arrive and hang them freely. Gentle waves normally disappear overnight. If needed, roll the tie loosely in the opposite direction rather than applying an iron.

Humid bathroom air can help, but keep the tie away from direct steam and water droplets. It should hang outside the main steam path.

Plan a compact travel wardrobe

Two or three ties can cover several appointments when chosen deliberately. A dark solid, a restrained stripe and a small pattern work across business, dinner and less formal settings.

Match each tie to the shirts and suits before packing. Photographs of the combinations on your phone save time in the morning and prevent unnecessary extras.
