Anatomy of a necktie: cloth, interlining and seam
Look beneath the visible silk. Bias cutting, interlining, tipping, keeper loop and flexible back seam all shape how a tie hangs and knots.
The face cloth is cut on the bias
Tie cloth is normally cut diagonally to the straight grain. This bias gives the long narrow piece controlled flexibility: it wraps into a knot, hangs straight and can relax after being untied.
The outer shell often uses several joined sections positioned so their seams are unobtrusive when worn. Accurate cutting prevents twisting edges.
Interlining shapes the knot
An inner layer gives body, influences the hand and helps the knot remain defined. Interlining that is too stiff makes the tie board-like; one that is too soft can make a weak knot. Outer cloth and inner construction must therefore be balanced.
Thickness alone does not demonstrate quality. Judge how evenly the tie rolls, knots and returns after wear.
Tipping and edges
Lining at the wide and narrow tips protects the inside and creates a clean point. Folded edges should make the front appear balanced, without loose threads, distorted corners or hard traces of adhesive.
The reverse reveals much about construction, but seams should never be pulled apart for inspection.
Keeper loop and flexible seam
The keeper loop controls the narrow blade. A longitudinal seam closes the tie, and in hand-finished construction it retains enough movement for tying. A small loop of thread can be part of this movement reserve and should not be cut.
Good construction is most apparent in use: the tie hangs calmly, makes a defined knot and recovers after careful untying.
