Wedding ties: colour, coordination, volume discount

Which colours suit a wedding, how groom and groomsmen coordinate — and why they need not wear the same tie.

The usual colours

Silver, cream, champagne, rosé and gold are the classic wedding colours for ties. They are light enough to look festive and quiet enough not to take attention from the bride.

All five work with a light summer suit as well as with a dark one.

In photographs

Light tones appear lighter in pictures than in the room, because flash and daylight brighten them further. If you would rather not stand in the wedding photographs wearing a tie that reads as white, choose one shade darker than you think.

Glossy silk reflects strongly under flash. Jacquard weave behaves more calmly here than smoothly woven satin silk, because the structure breaks up the light.

Groom and groomsmen

Coordinated does not mean identical. It looks better when all the ties come from the same colour family but differ in their pattern — a solid one for the groom, say, and fine grid or striped patterns for the groomsmen.
